Go home vs Go to home

In English, we often “go to” places.

This is why students sometimes say “go to home” which makes sense when you think about it.

But “go to home” is incorrect and should not be used.

To learn more, read on.

Go to a place

When we move or travel towards a particular place, we often say that we go to that place.

Here are a few examples.

  • Go to school.
  • Go to work.
  • Go to a shop.
  • Go to a cinema.
  • Go to a park.
  • Go to a party.
  • Go to an office.
  • Go to dinner.
  • Go to Spain/Germany/Italy etc.
  • Go to London/Las Vegas/Rome etc.

So why is it not possible to say “go to home”?

Go home” is an exception.

  • I am tired. I can’t wait to go home. Green Tick
  • I am tired. I can’t wait to go to home. Red Cross

  • Last night I went home early. Green Tick
  • Last night I went to home early. Red Cross

  • The boss is not in the office. He has gone home. Green Tick
  • The boss is not in the office. He has gone to home. Red Cross

It does not make sense why we do not say “go to home”.

We just do not.

That is the rule. Rules do not need to make sense.

You just need to remember that and use “go home” in future.
