Are you sure about that

This is a very common expression.

The best way to look at it is as its own phrase, with its own special meaning.

When you say: ‘Are you sure about that?’ you are simply asking for confirmation that what somebody has said is correct.

  • ‘Did he say anything about his father?’ ‘No.’ ‘Are you sure about that?’
  • ‘George talked to me about leaving for university.’ ‘University? Are you sure about that?’
